Off the Coach at 6am: Things to Do in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide Without a Car

Last updated 9 October 2026

Most of our travellers arrive in their desired city destination with no car hire plans - so we've put together a guide of things to do in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide without a car, starting from the moment your feet hit the footpath.

Everything named here is bookable through Firefly Experiences Powered by Experience OZ, and you can see what is bookable across all three cities before you have even packed!

What Time Does the Overnight Coach Get You Into the City?

Every Firefly overnight service arrives between 6:00 and 6:15am, right in the city centre.

  • FE31 Melbourne to Sydney: departs Southern Cross 19:00, arrives Sydney Central 06:10
  • FE21 Sydney to Melbourne: departs Sydney Central 19:00, arrives Southern Cross 06:15
  • FE80 Melbourne to Adelaide: departs Southern Cross 20:15, arrives Adelaide Central Bus Station 06:00
  • FE81 Adelaide to Melbourne: departs Adelaide Central Bus Station 19:45, arrives Southern Cross 06:05

The arrival points matter as much as the times. In Melbourne you step off at the Southern Cross Coach Terminal on Spencer Street. In Sydney it is Central Station at 488 Pitt Street, Haymarket. In Adelaide it is the Central Bus Station on Franklin Street. All three sit in the middle of their city, so there is no leg between arriving and starting. No shuttle to wait on, no working out how to get in from the edge of town.

If you would rather travel in daylight, there are day services on both corridors as well, so you can watch the country go past and arrive in the evening instead. Fares, departure times and stops for each route are on the Melbourne to Sydney coach page and the Melbourne to Adelaide coach page. For the Adelaide line town by town, see the full run-down of the western corridor.

What Are the Best Things to Do in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide Without a Car?

Book your day out before you leave and you step off the coach with a plan made and your spot already held. An early arrival is a generous head start when you know where you are walking.

That is what Firefly Experiences is for. It covers all three cities Firefly runs between, on a platform with 4,000 experiences to pick from. Feefo has it at 4.5 out of 5 across more than 16,000 independent reviews. Zoos, harbour cruises, wine tours, museums, the odd balloon flight - the options are extensive.

One thing worth knowing first. Some listings are full tours with the travel built in, and others are entry tickets you make your own way to. The name usually tells you which, so read it properly before you book. If you would rather find the quieter corners yourself, our pick of the places locals keep to themselves is a good companion to this list. Otherwise, browse what you can book in each city and pick your day out now.

What Can You Do in Sydney Without a Car?

Plenty, and a good share of it sits within a walk or a ferry ride of where the coach drops you.

If you are not planning to leave the centre, the Sydney Attractions Pass is the least fussy way in. It comes in 2, 3 and 4 attraction versions, so check what each one covers before you pick. If you would rather skip the pass, SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium General Admission and Sydney Tower Eye Entry Tickets are both bookable on their own. On the water, pick your temperament. The Sydney Harbour Cruise - 90 Minutes is the sit-back version. The Sydney Harbour Jet Boat Ride is not.

Head Out of Town

Taronga Zoo Sydney General Admission Tickets are entry on their own, and the Taronga Zoo Entry and Return Ferry Combo folds the crossing in, which is worth doing because the trip over is half the outing. Sydney Zoo Admission Tickets cover the other zoo on the list, entry only. And for open water, the Sydney Whale Watching Cruise from Darling Harbour. If you would rather spend nothing, Sydney's best walking trails need no booking at all.

Finish the Day Well

The Sunset Sydney Harbour Dinner Cruise is the easy way to spend the last few hours, and the Sydney Harbour Luxury Private Picnic Experience is the one for a trip that is a bit special. When you are ready, browse what is bookable in Sydney.

What Can You Do in Melbourne Without a Car?

Melbourne rewards both kinds of traveller, the one who never leaves the grid and the one who uses it as a starting line.

Flinders Street Station, St Paul's Cathedral and the Melbourne skyline beside the Yarra River

Stay in the City

The Melbourne Cricket Ground Tour and Australian Sports Museum Entrance is the one to book if anyone in your group has ever raised their voice at a television. SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium Entry Tickets put you right on the river. So do the Melbourne River Gardens 1 hour Sightseeing Cruise and the Melbourne Bottomless Brunch Cruise - 2 Hours, if you would like your sightseeing with something in your hand. For the view from above, there is the Melbourne City Balloon Flight. If the kids have run out of patience for buildings, book the Metart World Exhibition and Indoor Playground Entry Ticket and let them loose. If the trip is built around the kids, more family-friendly places to go in Melbourne is over here.

Head Out of Town

This is where the early arrival earns its keep. The Phillip Island Penguins Day Tour says what it is in the name, and the Reverse Great Ocean Road Tour is the same kind of full day out. Land just after six and you have time to make either pick-up. For something slower, Puffing Billy Belgrave to Lakeside Return Tickets are the steam train on its own, the old line through the Dandenongs. The Puffing Billy & Wildlife Tour from Melbourne is the guided day that pairs the train with the animals.

Finish the Day Well

The Melbourne Laneways and Hidden Bar Tour - 3 Hours takes care of the evening. It is better with a guide, because half the places worth finding in this city sit behind an unmarked door someone has to point out. When the day is set, see everything you can book in Melbourne.

What Can You Do in Adelaide Without a Car?

More than most people expect. A lot of it is a full day out rather than an afternoon, and an early arrival leaves you time for it.

Adelaide Oval and the footbridge over the River Torrens

Head Out of Town

Much of what is worth doing here sits outside the city, and a day tour is an easy yes when you are not already half a day behind. The Barossa Valley Hop On Hop Off Tour Adelaide City Return puts the useful part in its own name. The return leg into the city is part of the booking, so getting home is not something you have to solve at the end of a long day. The Adelaide Hills and Hahndorf Hideaway Small Group Tour is the smaller, slower version of the same idea, and Gorge Wildlife Park General Admission Tickets are entry only, the ones to book if the point of the day is animals.

Then there is the water, which Adelaide does not get enough credit for. You can be in it on the Adelaide Swim with Wild Dolphins Cruise from Glenelg, alongside it on the Dolphin Sanctuary Kayaking Eco Tour, or watching from a deck on the Port River Dolphin Cruise - 90 Minutes. If dry land suits you better, book Petaluma Wines Horse Trail Riding & Wine Tasting - For 2 and get both halves of a good afternoon.

Stay in the City

When it is raining, when the group cannot agree, or when someone in it is competitive enough to make it worthwhile, book the Hijinx Hotel Immersive Challenge Room - Rundle Place, Adelaide.

Finish the Day Well

For the hour when the lights come on, you can be above the city on the Adelaide Oval Roof Twilight Climb - Adelaide, or out on the gulf on the Glenelg Twilight Catamaran Cruise with Drink - 90 Minutes. Joining the coach from a regional stop rather than Adelaide itself? Here is how the line works town by town. And when the day is taking shape, see the full Adelaide list.

How Do You Book the Coach and the Day Out?

Book the seat first, because it sets the shape of everything else. Choose your Melbourne to Adelaide departure or your Melbourne to Sydney departure, then work backwards from the arrival time. Return legs run on the same corridors, so you can plan the trip home at the same time on the Adelaide to Melbourne coach page or the Sydney to Melbourne coach page. Pulling the whole trip together on a budget? Our guide to travelling well for less is worth a read before you book. And if you would rather talk it through, the team is on 1300 730 740 and happy to help you plan it properly.

Then book the day. Firefly Experiences Powered by Experience OZ holds all of it in one place, so you are not chasing four different operators the night before you leave. Sort it now and the only decision left at 6am is where you are getting your coffee. Line up the day you land.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a car to get around after I arrive?

No. All three Firefly terminals are in the city centre, so you arrive where you actually want to be. On the listings, a full tour has the travel built in and an entry ticket does not, so read the name before you book.

Can I book a tour for the same morning I arrive?

Yes. Everything is bookable in advance, so your spot is held before you travel. Start times vary between operators, so check the listing for the one you want and lock it in before you leave.

Is there a direct coach between Sydney and Adelaide?

No. Firefly runs between Melbourne and Sydney, and between Melbourne and Adelaide, so a Sydney to Adelaide trip connects through Melbourne.

What is included in my fare?

Your 45kg luggage allowance and an onboard toilet, plus free Wi-Fi and USB charging on most services. If you are travelling with a wheelchair, call 1300 730 740 to arrange it in advance.
